Located at the summit of the Butte Montmartre, not far from the Terrass Hotel, Montmartre’s Sacré Cœur Basilica was built starting in 1875 as an act of penance after France was defeated by Prussia in 1870.
Built in Romano-Byzantine style, the monument was consecrated in 1919, when it received the title of “basilica”, thus becoming a shrine.
Before you even step inside Sacré Cœur, enjoy the spectacular view of Paris from the square in front of the Basilica. Then, climb up the main dome to admire a view that extends up to 50 km in all directions! The Basilica’s most remarkable elements include an 18,835-kg bell christened “La Savoyarde”, three metres in diameter, the largest bell in France. The mosaic covering the apse ceiling and the huge organs are other wonderful, imposing features of the inside architecture not to be missed. | |||||||
